Embark on a transformative two-part journey into the world of winter hiking, combining hands-on learning with real-world adventure in the quiet beauty of Western Maine. This course is designed to help you gain confidence navigating winter weather, snow, and cold temperatures, while building the skills and mindset needed for safe and empowering cold-season hikes. Led by all-season ultrarunner and Triple Crowner Effie, this women-centered experience is for anyone ready to step into the outdoors with more knowledge, preparation, and support. WHAT TO EXPECT: Week 1 ~ GEAR UP (Gray, ME) Saturday, Feb 28 (9am–1pm) Learn everything you need to hike safely, warmly, and confidently in winter conditions: - Layering systems for cold-weather comfort - Gear essentials: traction, poles, backpacks, hydration, and more - Footwear strategies for snow, ice, and slush - How to read winter weather forecasts and prepare accordingly - Nutrition, hydration, and staying warm during movement and rest - Practical tips for safety, mindset, and risk management in winter terrain This in-person workshop includes hands-on demonstrations, real gear examples, and space for your questions. Week 2 ~ HIKE + REVIVE (Denmark, ME) Saturday, March 7 (9am–3pm) We’ll meet in Denmark and set out for a 5-mile, no-drop hike up Pleasant Mountain, taking our time to move, learn, and soak in the views. Expect: - A casual, supportive pace with plenty of stops for snacks, photos, and discussion - Roughly 2,000 feet of elevation gain on snowy, rocky terrain - A welcoming space for connection, reflection, and shared adventure After the hike, we’ll head to a nearby 1-hour wood-fired sauna session to warm up and restore your body. Expect to leave feeling grounded, accomplished, and refreshed. CONNECT ~ GROW ~ EXPLORE ~ REVIVE This course is more than an introduction—it’s an invitation to build confidence, deepen your relationship with nature, and connect with a supportive group of women embracing the beauty of winter together. Good to Know: - You’ll receive a detailed email one week before with meeting locations, packing lists, and tips - Participants are responsible for their own transportation, lunch/snacks, and winter hiking gear - This course is women-centered and open to all who identify with that space - No previous winter hiking experience needed—just a moderate level
